Gorge Ride – 2013

Location: The Dalles, Oregon

Description: The seventh annual Gorge Ride sponsored by the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway will be held Saturday, June 15, 2013, beginning at the Gorge Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Drive, in The Dalles, Oregon. It extends 19.25 miles along the historic highway and State Trail west to the Senator Mark O. Hatfield West Trailhead, just east of Hood River, and back again; a total of 39 miles, but because it’s an out-and-back, you can make it any distance you wish.

This is a fundraiser. All proceeds to toward restoring and reconnecting abandoned segments of the Historic Highway so that, hopefully by its 100th birthday, June 7, 2016, you will be able to bike its entire 73 mile length from Troutdale to The Dalles, OR without having to be on Interstate I-84!

TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT GO TO: www.hcrh.org

Route: This route is a combination of historic highway that is open to motor vehicles, with very low traffic, and the HCRH State Trail that is open only to hikers and bicyclists. It’s an out and back route of 38.5 miles. This ride is supported with water stops, snacks, mechanical support and SAG wagons. Maps with cue sheet and elevation chart are provided.
•Experience the panoramic view at Rowena Crest.
•Visit the grounds of the historic Mayerdale Estate.
•Travel through the restored Mosier Twin Tunnels.

The terrain really isn’t tough — the HCRH was built with no grades exceeding 5%. (Folks of all ages & physical condition have ridden it.) When you encounter a hill, just ‘gear down’, take it one pedal stroke at a time, and remember that it’s taking you to a view even nicer than the ones on the way up!

Registration will be open through midnight, Tuesday, June 12th with a non-refundable, online, advance registration fee per rider: Ages 12 & up = $35. Ages 6-11 = $15. Under 6 is free. Add $10/rider for day-of-event registration. Online registration is the only advance registration method.

A sack lunch from the Basalt Rock Café, within the Gorge Discovery Center, will be available for purchase during on-line registration for $12. Lunches may be picked Up: 11 AM until 4 PM.

T-shirts (men’s & women’s styles) featuring Gorge Ride graphics are available for purchase during on-line registration for $15 for the cotton/poly blend. NEW THIS YEAR: A shirt with the same logos, but in a 100% polyester, hi-tech fabric for $25, as a special order item. (The women’s version of this shirt has a gently contoured silhouette and a slight scoop neck.) Pick up your shirt order on the day of the ride when you pick up your packet.

Packet pickup will be at the Gorge Discovery Center on June 15 from 7 AM to 10 AM. Course opens at 7 AM and closes at 4 PM. Participants will be required to sign our waiver and release form at packet pickup. Riders under 18 years-of-age must be accompanied on the ride by a registered adult and their waiver and release form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Participants must wear an ANSI or Snell approved helmet.
